Orhaniye is famous for the sandbank that divides the bay, indeed, sometimes it can look as if people are ‘walking on water’. Local legend decrees that a young girl wanted to meet her lover on the other shore, she would hide sand in the hem of her clothes and then try and fill in the bay with the sand in order to walk across and meet him.
The traditional village of Orhaniye is strictly regulated by local officials to ensure that Orhaniye remains a traditional village and is not overtaken by high rise blocks. Orhaniye has a handful of restaurants offering simple Turkish cuisine to more cosmopolitan fare in the Marina area.
The Saturday Market is a must visit with local fruit and veg, cheeses, olives, clothes and many household items to try and barter for. If you feel the need for a bit more excitement then the bustling town of Marmaris is only a 25-minute drive away.
